What is asbestos exposure and why is it serious?

Asbestos exposure can lead to devastating health consequences and be a serious health concern for workers. Asbestos exposure can contribute to several different types of devastating illnesses which is why workers need to understand what they are and be familiar with the legal resources that may be available to help them.

Asbestos-related illnesses can include asbestosis and mesothelioma which are both serious illnesses. Asbestosis is a fibrous scarring of the lungs and mesothelioma is a malignant form of cancer that lines the chest and abdominal cavities. Asbestos was historically used in building materials and because of its durable and fibrous nature, it can produce dust that becomes deposited in the lungs when inhaled.

Because it is possible to suffer asbestos exposure without realizing it, construction workers and other workers who may be exposed should know where it can be found. Asbestos can be found in vinyl floor tiles, roofing felt, roof coatings, cement shingles and other cement products, pipeline wrapping, disk brake pads and other car parts and other materials as well. Workers suffering from an asbestos-related illness may need help with medical care, treatment and costs, rehabilitation, lost earnings and other harm suffered.

Any type of workplace illness can have a devastating impact on the injured worker and their family which is why workers suffering with a workplace illness, whether asbestos-related or otherwise, should be familiar with the different legal options and protections to help them with the harm they have suffered and with their damages. Asbestos exposure is serious but injured workers are protected.
