Rear-end collisions are avoidable tragedies

If you have ever had another vehicle hit yours from behind, you are not alone. Rear-end collisions are the most common accidents that occur on the roads. You may be fortunate if yours is just a fender bender, but in many cases, a crash from behind can be quite serious.

While there may be some circumstances in which it is impossible to avoid colliding with the vehicle in front of you, rear-end collisions are almost always preventable through the careful driving and attention of the driver in the vehicle behind.

How vulnerable are you?

A rear-end crash can result in catastrophic injuries if the impact sends your vehicle into the one ahead of you. Additionally, a rear-end collision involving a tractor-trailer or other large, commercial vehicle can have tragic results. Of course, every accident has its unique factors, but a crash from behind often has one or more of the following acts of negligence:

  • Driving too fast for conditions, such as when it is foggy or the sun is shining brightly
  • Following your vehicle too closely when weather is poor, such as when it is raining, snowy or icy
  • Tailgating you, especially when it is an act of aggressive driving or road rage
  • Failing to observe changes in driving circumstances, such as when traffic will be slowing down approaching an accident or a construction zone
  • Driving while impaired or distracted

You may check your rearview mirrors frequently as you drive on Ohio roads, especially if you are slowing down at an intersection or for other traffic conditions. There may be few things more terrifying than seeing a vehicle approaching you from behind while the driver is looking down at a cell phone or gazing out the side window. You may try to get out of the driver's way, but what if there is no room to move?

Advanced technology in newer vehicles includes collision avoidance systems. Unfortunately, these are not foolproof, nor do they include older models. Since crash avoidance has only been widely available for the last few years, it is more likely you will encounter a car without this safeguard. Relying on the attention and common sense of the driver behind you may not be very comforting. However, you may find some comfort in seeking restitution with the help of an attorney for any injuries you suffer in such an accident.
