Road construction worker struck and killed in Ohio

On Behalf of | Mar 14, 2019 | Construction Workers' Accidents |

Although they may not be found as frequently during the winter months, individuals in Ohio can encounter construction sites year-round. Whether it is a private or public dwelling or building or road construction, construction sites can be large and have many working parts. This could give rise to heavy machinery use, workers working near automobile traffic and other dangerous conditions. Although construction workers are aware of the risks involved in this industry, when a construction accident does occur the workers and their loved ones are usually not prepared for the aftermath of the incident.

According to reports, a motorist was recently charged following a fatal accident in a construction zone. The accident took place back in 2018 and, following investigation, a male driver was charged with two counts of aggravated homicide after hitting and killing a 42-year-old male construction worker.

Reports indicated that the accident occurred on US 24 near Fallen Timbers. The worker was with a paving company and he was putting lane markings down on the newly paved road. He was working on the last stretch of the construction project when he was hit and killed by a motorist. Police indicated that witnesses did not believe the driver was speeding or driving erratically at the time of the accident. It is not clear if alcohol, drugs or distractions played a role.

There are many dangers in the workplace, whether they are apparent or not. Road construction workers face many daily hazards, one of them being close to moving traffic. While precautions are taken to avoid such accidents, this sometimes cannot protect workers from the negligence of another party.

Following a fatal construction accident, it is important for the surviving family members to know their options and rights. Much like an injured worker could file to receive workers’ compensation benefits, family members could also seek these benefits. This could help address losses caused by the fatal work accident, helping them to overcome these financial hardships.
