How SSD benefits are impacted when workers' comp is received

While many workers in Ohio know it is a possibility, suffering from a work injury is still an unexpected event. What is even more unexpected is how much this incident impacts an individual. A minor incident may result in a worker requiring medical attention and missing work for a few days or weeks. However, a more serious incident could cause a worker to suffer a temporary or permanent disability. This can result in the inability to work, causing the worker to suffer serious financial hardships.

When a worker suffers an injury on-the-job, their first thought after obtaining medical attention and treatment is seeking financial assistance while they recover. Typically, this means filing for workers' compensation benefits. However, this may not be enough to get by when a workplace injury has caused a worker to suffer a temporary or permanent disability.

Social Security disability benefits can be very resourceful and necessary for disabled workers. However, it should be noted that SSD benefits could be reduced if a recipient is also receiving workers' comp benefits. When both of these benefits are received, the total cannot exceed 80 percent of the recipient's average current earnings before he or she became disabled. If this amount does exceed that number, then it will be deducted from the SSD benefits. However, SSD benefits are not reduced when a recipient is also receiving Veterans Administration benefits, certain types of state and local government benefits or Supplemental Security Income.

When the unexpected happens, it is important to take the time to understand what you can do. A serious workplace accident can significantly alter the life of an individual, making it vital to fully understand how both disability benefits and workers' comp could help a disabled worker address the hardships caused by this matter.
