It is clear that certain industries pose an increased risk for injuries and illnesses for employees. For these employees, it is likely understandable when a worker suffers and injury or illness; however, the reality is that any type of worker in any type of work environment could suffer an injury or illness related to the workplace. In some cases, these incidents could be severe, causing a worker to be killed immediately or shortly after suffering a workplace injury or illness.

Based on current data, it was found that more than 5,000 workers in the U.S. were killed due to a workplace incident in 20016. This equates to 14 workers a day. When compared from the data collected the year prior, this was a 7 percent increase, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In 2016, 5,190 deaths occurred as a result of a workplace accident. For 2015, there were 4,836 recorded deaths. Based on this data, the rate of employee deaths among full time workers rose from 3.4 per 100,000 to 3.6. What is the take away from these numbers? The biggest take away is the fact that work is becoming more dangerous for certain groups of workers in the nation. This is the highest rate since 2010 and the greatest number dead since 2008.

The transportation and construction industry accounted for the largest share of fatal job injuries, with transportation accounting for 40 percent. A surprising find was the jump in employee deaths for those working in health care and food services. These industries receive very little attention and oversight when it comes to inspecting these work environments for safety standards and compliance. Researchers noted a 40 percent rise in fatal occupational injuries in bars and restaurants, which is a majority-female occupation.

Whether you are an injured employee or the loved ones of a deceased employee, workers’ compensation is a possible benefit to recover. Workers’ comp can help address losses and damages related to the incident, helping to offset any financial hardships. Seeking worker’s compensation could be a very valuable step to take, as it could help the worker or their loved ones address medical bill, funeral costs, lost wages and other losses suffered.
